Google says schools that opt out of AI tools will also lose access to search

Starting in early 2027, Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Google Search will be disabled by default for student accounts using Google Workspace for Education. Administrators will have to explicitly enable the services, or students will lose access, with no setting allowing schools to retain standard search while disabling AI-generated summaries. The decision comes as several major US school districts have already banned or restricted these tools because of concerns about cheating and student privacy. Google also plans to pilot a feature called Guided Learning, designed to guide students toward problem-solving rather than immediately provide answers. Districts will therefore have to decide whether maintaining their AI restrictions is worth giving up Google Search.
