Google exempts sanctioned nations from Android developer verification, raising questions for crypto app distribution

Starting September 30, 2026, Google will require all Android developers to verify their identity before their apps can be installed on devices running Google services, including sideloaded applications. Devices located in sanctioned countries such as Russia and China will be exempt from these verification checks due to legal compliance requirements related to US export controls. The program will extend to third-party app stores operated by Samsung, OPPO, Honor and other manufacturers. Crypto app developers targeting Brazil, Indonesia and Thailand, where cryptocurrency adoption is growing rapidly, will be subject to these new requirements. Major wallets like MetaMask, Trust Wallet and Phantom, already distributed through the Play Store, should not be affected.
