An internal audit by Google DeepMind published on October 14, 2026 found no measurable acceleration in AI progress that can be attributed to AI itself. The team tracked 123 models and 92 benchmarks using the General Capability Index, finding a steady climb of approximately 0.1 GCI points per month with no significant structural speedup after April 2026. AI tools now contribute to over 75% of production code at DeepMind, though 88% of changes still require human review. The share of code changes fully delegated to AI rose from 7.5% to 11.9%. On RE-Bench, DeepMind’s Argon agent solved roughly half of 74 realistic machine learning tasks.
