Google and Synaptics have introduced an open-source, low-power edge AI microcontroller, the Astra SL2610/SL2600 series, designed for wearables, smart glasses, and industrial sensors. The chip combines Google’s Coral NPU M2 with Synaptics’ Torq NPU, Arm CPU cores, and multimedia processing capabilities. The microcontroller draws less than 6 milliwatts on average during on-device inference, representing approximately 40% lower energy use compared to prevailing edge AI processors. The companies developed an open-source software stack over 18 months using MLIR/IREE-based tools to reduce fragmentation in edge computing for IoT applications. A formal demonstration is scheduled for Synaptics’ Tech Day on October 20, 2026.
