Goldman Sachs estimates AI is costing the US 16,000 jobs per month

Goldman Sachs Research estimates in its April 2026 report that artificial intelligence has reduced monthly US payroll growth by roughly 16,000 positions over the past year, enough to nudge the unemployment rate up by 0.1 percentage points. This net figure masks gross displacement of around 25,000 jobs per month, offset by approximately 9,000 positions created through AI augmentation roles. Technology, management consulting, graphic design, and customer service are the industries most affected, with Gen Z and entry-level white-collar workers bearing a disproportionate share of the displacement. By June 2026, Goldman revised its estimate downward to about 11,000 net positions lost per month, as counterbalancing hiring in construction and other less AI-exposed sectors partially compensated the drag.
