Generalist raises $200M for AI robotics development as physical AI race heats up

Generalist AI, a San Mateo-based startup, has raised approximately $200 million in a funding round led by 8VC. The company has now raised over $650 million in total and is valued at over $2 billion. Founded in 2024 by former engineers from DeepMind and Boston Dynamics, the firm develops embodied AI foundation models for general-purpose robots, claiming 99% reliability on dexterous tasks and execution speeds up to three times faster than previous benchmarks. Target markets include manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and agriculture, in a context of intense competition where rival Physical Intelligence is valued at over $11 billion.
