FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson is set to outline his vision for artificial intelligence regulation at the Reuters NEXT Newsmaker event. Appointed by President Trump on January 20, 2025, Ferguson advocates a « regulate less, enforce more » approach, arguing that the FTC’s existing authorities are sufficient to address deceptive practices and competitive harms in the AI space. The FTC has nonetheless pursued enforcement actions regarding the impact of AI chatbots on children and misleading advertising claims about AI capabilities. Ferguson strongly criticized, during a speech at Georgetown University on September 15, 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal for antitrust clearance to collectively slow AI model development, calling it « deeply suspicious ».
