FTC and 20 states sue Dollar General, saying it overcharged its poorest customers by millions

The Federal Trade Commission and 20 states sued Dollar General on Monday, alleging that the discount chain charged customers more at checkout than the prices displayed on shelves, labels and advertisements. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, estimates that the discrepancies extracted millions of dollars from customers and generated nearly 30,000 complaints between 2019 and March 2026. Dollar General disputes the allegations, acknowledges that occasional discrepancies can occur and says its goal is perfect consistency between shelf and register prices. The company’s shares fell about 4% after the lawsuit was announced, while regulators cited seven settlements in six states totaling roughly $6 million in penalties between 2019 and 2026.
