David Schwartz, former Ripple CTO and creator of the XRP Ledger network, responded with a sarcastic joke to a report by EasyA co-founder Dom Kwok, whose balances were allegedly wiped out by hackers. Schwartz joked that the attackers had added 517 XLM to his Binance account, referencing the long-running rivalry between Ripple and Stellar, founded by Jed McCaleb. In reality, the attackers stole 233.46 million XRP, worth about $296 million, from Binance’s hot wallets, with no way to freeze the tokens at the XRP Ledger protocol level. Ripple did, however, block roughly $200 million in stolen RLUSD stablecoin, helping protect users’ funds. The attack, estimated at $6.3 billion to $6.36 billion across 10 blockchain networks, is attributed to the North Korean group TraderTraitor, also known as Lazarus, while Binance and its partners have frozen about $3 billion in total.
