Foreign holdings of US Treasuries fall in June, led by Japan, UK, China

In June, the world’s three largest foreign Treasury holders reduced their combined positions by $61 billion, bringing total foreign holdings down to $9.299 trillion from $9.371 trillion in May. Net inflows collapsed by 88%, dropping from $56.6 billion in May to just $6.8 billion in June. Japan remains the largest foreign holder at $1.116 trillion, but its holdings fell 2.3% month-over-month. China saw the steepest decline, cutting its position by 4% to $633.4 billion, its lowest level since September 2008. Together, Japan, the UK, and China account for over 31% of total US publicly held debt held by foreign entities.
