The George Town Council in Tasmania approved by a 6-1 vote the 288MW AI data centre project proposed by Singapore-based Firmus Technologies, despite strong opposition from the local population. The project, to be located at the Bell Bay industrial precinct, notably includes 276 diesel backup generators, a major concern for residents regarding air quality and noise. The local population massively mobilized with nearly 6,000 petition signatures and 349 written objections. Firmus projects the creation of over 380 construction jobs and 115 permanent positions once the facility is operational. The decision can still be appealed within a 14-day window.
