The Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency began contacting banks on Monday to ask about unusual activity and service disruptions following the Binance hack. Banks are reviewing their security systems and ability to absorb or manage similar threats, while regulators could intensify their oversight of crypto custody, counterparty exposure and incident response. Binance says approximately $6.34 billion in digital assets were affected on October 29 and that $2.85 billion had been frozen or intercepted. The attack reportedly began with compromised software installed in June and continued through social engineering, stolen credentials and malicious software. Experts warn that these methods also threaten traditional banks and that the growing use of agentic AI in financial operations increases the risk of unauthorized transactions and data exfiltration.
