EVs dominate China’s car market: 5 takeaways from the country’s latest auto sales data

In the six months through July, Geely’s Xingyuan electric hatchback became China’s best-selling model with nearly 197,500 units sold, priced just under 100,000 yuan ($14,820). Tesla’s Model Y ranked second with over 180,000 vehicles sold despite a price tag ranging from 263,500 to 313,500 yuan, nearly triple that of the Geely. Despite three models in the top 10, BYD’s best performer was the Yuan UP SUV in fifth place with approximately 97,700 units, while its overall passenger car sales dropped more than 10% in the first half. Volkswagen was the only traditional foreign automaker to make the top 10 with its Lavida sedan in ninth place. In July, new energy vehicles (electric and hybrid) accounted for 65.1% of new passenger car sales, up from 54% a year earlier, yet total passenger car sales fell 20.3% year-to-date.
