Since the financial crisis, euro-area GDP growth has averaged 0.9% per year, compared to above 2% in the United States, fueling gloom about Europe’s economic prospects. On September 16, Fortune will reveal its annual ranking of the 500 largest European companies by revenue, with Volkswagen, Shell and Glencore among last year’s leaders. A CEO Forum held the same day in London will bring together leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, Ferrari, Volvo Cars, EDF, NatWest and Société Générale, representing nearly $2 trillion in wealth. According to Goldman Sachs, European growth has proven more resilient than expected despite the energy price shock, thanks to declining energy dependence, supportive fiscal policies and an unemployment rate at a historical low. The European Innovation Scorecard also revealed an 11.6 percentage point increase in innovation performance since 2019.
