Ethereum set to enable gas fee payments without holding ETH in 2027 upgrade

Ethereum will integrate a new transactional architecture allowing users to pay gas fees without holding ETH, thanks to EIP-8141 as part of the Hegotá hard fork expected in 2027. These « frame transactions » (type 0x06) break each transaction into up to 64 programmable frames, enabling applications to sponsor fees in ERC-20 tokens such as USDC. EIP-8141 reached « Scheduled for Inclusion » status on August 27, 2026, reducing the need for external infrastructure such as bundlers or relayers. Beyond user experience improvements, frame transactions allow privacy protocols to fund their own gas costs, solving a circular dependency problem that previously compromised user privacy.
