Ethereum Proposal Would Let Users Pay Gas Without Holding ETH

Share

EIP-8141 proposes allowing Ethereum users to pay gas fees in ERC-20 tokens or have them entirely sponsored by an application. The proposal breaks down a transaction into up to 64 « frames », each an ordinary contract call: validation, payment approval, and execution. Existing wallets can benefit from sponsored transactions and batched actions without migrating to a smart contract wallet, thanks to a « default code » defined in the specification. The proposal also serves as an off-ramp toward post-quantum cryptography, at that time signatures will require aggregation. EIP-8141 has been a draft since January and is not scheduled for any network upgrade.
