Ethereum Glamsterdam Upgrade Delayed Over Smart Contract Security Risks

Share

The Ethereum Foundation postponed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet after researchers identified security risks related to how EIP-8037 could interact with existing smart contracts. The activation scheduled for October 26 was canceled, no replacement date has been announced, and the mainnet rollout remains undecided, including potential December dates discussed by developers. The work focuses on changes to gas accounting when blockchain state is created, which could leave contracts with different amounts of gas than expected when operations fail. The delay gives developers time to examine these compatibility issues before testing continues, but it does not cancel Glamsterdam, which includes an enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists. ETH fluctuated between $2,370 and $2,415, losing about 0.5%, as the delay added uncertainty to Ethereum’s development timeline.
