Vitalik Buterin published a blog post on September 27 outlining his vision for Ethereum, which he now presents as a “cryptographic world computer.” This hybrid system combines blockchain consensus with advanced cryptographic tools, privacy layers, and decentralized off-chain computation. Buterin expects the Hegota fork, planned for 2027, to be the last “normal” upgrade the network will see. Over the past year, gas limits have been increased, blob capacity has expanded, and zkEVM development has advanced. However, Buterin warns that technical progress without adherence to Ethereum’s foundational principles, including decentralization and censorship resistance, risks producing a faster but fundamentally compromised system.
