Research group Epoch AI published an analysis on September 18, 2026 of math preprints on arXiv showing that the share of papers acknowledging AI use rose from 4% in April 2026 to 25% by August 2026. Approximately 6% of these preprints credit AI with a substantive contribution comparable to the role of a co-author. Differential geometry shows the most striking increase, jumping from about 8% to 57%. Established authors who had been publishing regularly before 2023 disclose AI help at similar rates as other researchers. This shift in academic norms raises questions about how journals, departments, and hiring committees will need to evaluate these contributions.
