Elon Musk announced that X would make all government censorship requests publicly visible, as part of a broader algorithm transparency initiative launched in January 2026. This move aligns with Musk’s initial promise to make free speech the core mission of the social network he acquired in late 2022. While this transparency represents progress compared to the discreet handling of such requests by most major platforms, visibility does not equate to resistance. As of August 2026, no part of the open-sourced algorithm integrates individual government request data directly into its code, preventing researchers from verifying the causal impact of these requests on the algorithmic outcomes shown to users.
