Christine Lagarde has announced that she will step down as president of the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, around nine months before the scheduled end of her eight-year term. Without explaining the reason for her early departure, she said on Thursday that serving the institution had been a source of great pride and thanked those who had supported her over the past seven years. Her departure will allow the current members of the European Council, including French President Emmanuel Macron, to participate in selecting her successor before France’s presidential election. Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen currently leads the polls, while French inflation has reached 3.4%, its highest level since January 2024.
