Moderna and Merck presented the results of a Phase 3 trial involving roughly 1,100 melanoma patients after partial data leaked on social media. Intismeran autogene, a personalized mRNA vaccine administered with Keytruda after surgery, reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42% compared with Keytruda alone and reduced the risk of distant spread or death by 38%. Six melanoma specialists described the results as a clinically meaningful advance, although the long-term survival benefit remains unconfirmed and the scale-up of vaccine manufacturing still needs to be proven. Despite the favorable data, Moderna’s shares fell as much as 25% on Thursday as investors found the primary result below expectations; Moderna is targeting full regulatory approval of the vaccine next year.
