Die Linke, a German opposition party, filed a motion (Drucksache 21/5824) on May 6-7, 2026 to ban proof-of-work crypto assets and overhaul their taxation. The party proposes scrapping the one-year tax exemption on crypto gains and treating them as capital income under the Abgeltungsteuer regime. The motion estimates 47.3 billion euros in realized gains by over 7 million users, with only a small fraction reported for taxation. Die Linke also calls for exit taxation on unrealized gains for individuals leaving Germany and enhanced blockchain analytics to link wallets to real identities. The motion, still at the opposition stage, would collide with the EU’s harmonized MiCA framework.
