Democratic lawmakers have launched investigations into a web of critical mineral deals involving the Trump and Lutnick families, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest between private investments and government approvals. Kaz Resources, a mining venture in Kazakhstan, secured up to $1.6 billion in federal financing for a tungsten project, as tungsten is classified as a critical mineral for national defense. On March 25, Democrats voted to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. regarding his firm’s involvement with Vulcan Elements, which secured a $620 million Pentagon loan. Cantor Fitzgerald, the financial firm previously led by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, assisted with private fundraising for USA Rare Earth, which received a major Commerce Department deal including a finalized 10% government stake. Senators Martin Heinrich and Jared Huffman demanded documents and briefings on February 2 regarding conflicts of interest across several mining companies.
