Democrats block Trump’s $2.8B weapons transfer to Israel

Representative Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, placed a hold on a proposed $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel on September 16, blocking a package that includes 60,000 heavy 2,000-pound bombs. Meeks cited concerns about compliance with US and international law, particularly regarding civilian safety in densely populated areas like Gaza and Lebanon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is likely to issue an emergency national security determination to bypass the congressional review process. Since taking office, the Trump administration has facilitated over $12 billion in arms sales to Israel, including a $6.67 billion package approved in January 2026.
