Dangote refinery, already the world’s largest single-train facility with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, plans to invest $28 billion to double capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. The expansion is driven by fuel shortages from the Iran conflict, which enabled the Nigerian company to become the world’s largest jet fuel exporter in April and May 2026. Aliko Dangote’s personal fortune grew by approximately $4.86 to $5 billion in 2026, reaching $34.8 billion. Paradoxically, Nigeria continues to import 43% of its gasoline despite hosting this massive refinery, due to regulatory conflicts with the downstream petroleum regulator. Dangote also plans to build a new facility in Kenya to extend its refining footprint in East Africa.
