Cyberattack in Berlin: Rhysida gang demands 30 bitcoins ransom

Share

The Rhysida ransomware gang is demanding 30 bitcoins, worth approximately $1.8 million at current rates, in exchange for not releasing 5.79 terabytes of data stolen from Berlin’s administration between August 7 and 12. Berlin police detected the intrusion on August 14, after the hackers had been operating undetected for a week. Mayor Kai Wegner confirmed that Berlin refuses to pay the ransom, despite a regional election scheduled for September 20, sixteen days before the countdown expires. The Rhysida group, flagged by the FBI and CISA in November 2023, has previously targeted government entities: the British Library, which was demanded 20 bitcoins in October 2023, and Seattle Airport, which received a demand for 100 bitcoins in August 2024.
