North Korea is estimated to have stolen $12.8 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017, accounting for more than 45% of total losses estimated at $28 billion over that period. The Binance hack, attributed to the TraderTraitor group, reportedly resulted in $6.36 billion being stolen and brought North Korea’s 2026 total to $7.4 billion out of a provisional $8.7 billion. The proceeds are laundered through splitting, decentralized platforms, bridges, swaps, mixers and Chinese over-the-counter brokers. According to CertiK, 2026 has already recorded the highest losses ever seen in the sector, with approximately $9.2 billion lost, including $6.5 billion in October alone.
