Coinbase and Better Home & Finance have launched a mortgage product allowing homebuyers to use their Bitcoin or USDC as collateral for down payments without selling their assets, avoiding a taxable event on capital gains. This dual-loan structure combines a standard Fannie Mae-conforming mortgage with a secondary loan backed by crypto held in Coinbase custody, available to eligible Coinbase One members as of mid-August 2026. Those members qualifying receive up to $10,000 in lender credits toward closing costs, equal to 1% of the mortgage amount. The first Fannie Mae-backed tokenized mortgage closed on June 4, 2026, for a couple in Michigan. The product has no margin calls on crypto price drops, with liquidation only occurring if borrowers miss mortgage payments for 60 days.
