Ethereum and Base, the Coinbase-backed layer-2 network, have abandoned their efforts to unify next-generation wallet standards, each advancing its own account-abstraction design. The two protocols promote different transaction architectures: Ethereum favors flexibility with EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions), while Base opts for a more structured approach with EIP-8130. This divergence could force wallets to accommodate distinct architectures across networks that historically shared the same user experience. Matt Garnett, Ethereum core developer, notes that divergence among L2s is inevitable due to competitive pressure pushing these networks to innovate faster than L1 can. Lawyer Gabriel Shapiro goes further, arguing that L2s are merely « less bad » than competing L1s for Ethereum, rather than genuinely beneficial.
