CME Group has launched a financially settled futures contract on a nine-cryptocurrency basket, but Bitcoin and Ethereum together account for 86.29% of the basket, with Bitcoin alone representing 74.47%, Ethereum at 11.82%, and the remaining seven assets including XRP, Solana, and Hyperliquid making up less than 14%. The Nasdaq CME Crypto Index and its Micro version allow institutions to hedge or gain exposure to the crypto market through a single trade, eliminating the need to manage nine separate spot positions. Financial settlement means no underlying tokens are delivered at expiry, and the contracts leverage CME’s existing regulatory framework for its single-asset Bitcoin and Ether futures. The index is rebalanced and reconstituted quarterly, so the current weights, particularly the 74.47% Bitcoin allocation, may change at the next quarterly reset.
