Cloudflare’s CTO Dane Knecht has proposed to SpaceX a joint development of congestion-control algorithms specifically designed for low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. The issue stems from Starlink satellites orbiting at approximately 550 kilometers and constantly changing positions, causing latency spikes that traditional algorithms like CUBIC mistakenly interpret as network congestion. Starlink reached approximately 12 million subscribers by end of Q2 2026, doubling its total from the previous year, while traffic from Starlink passing through Cloudflare’s network rose 2.3 times in 2025. No formal partnership has been announced yet, though Elon Musk reportedly forwarded the proposal to the Starlink team.
