Chris Foster steps down from Citadel after turning Europe’s gas crisis into billions

Chris Foster, senior portfolio manager at Citadel based in London, is leaving the firm after generating approximately $2 billion in profits from European natural gas markets in 2022. His team accounted for roughly $2 billion of the approximately $8 billion in total profits generated by Citadel’s commodities division that year. These results helped Citadel overtake Bridgewater Associates to become the most profitable hedge fund in history. Foster also donated £25 million to Mansfield College at Oxford University, his alma mater. His departure comes as the market conditions that shaped his greatest triumph have largely dissipated, with European natural gas markets having calmed considerably from the 2022 extremes.
