Unrestricted Chinese AI models triggered a 440% surge in malicious instructions posted on public blockchains, according to Chainalysis. Daily malicious on-chain writes climbed from 2.06 to 11.1 in under a year. This explosion stems primarily from state-linked operators, particularly North Korea and Iran, which now dominate these activities using a technique called blockchain dead drops. Attackers exploit blockchain permanence to store malicious payloads and communicate with compromised machines, evading domain seizures and server shutdowns. The rise of unfiltered open-source AI models eliminated the technical barrier that previously constrained attack frequency.
