China’s central bank purchased approximately 23 tonnes of gold in September, its largest monthly purchase in roughly three years. This marked its 23rd consecutive month of buying, with over 103 tonnes already acquired in 2026. Its total reserves now reach 2,410 tonnes, making China the world’s fifth-largest gold holder. Other central banks, particularly those of Poland, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, have also significantly increased their holdings during the year. Gold prices peaked at $4,700 per ounce during the mid-August rally before retreating to around $4,194 by Friday’s close.
