The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the import and sale of humanoid robots, quadrupeds, and power inverters manufactured abroad, primarily targeting Chinese manufacturers like Unitree and AGIBOT. According to Barclays and Counterpoint Research, 85% of humanoid robots deployed worldwide in 2025 are Chinese, with approximately 15,000 units shipped globally, including over 5,000 each from Unitree and AGIBOT. Morgan Stanley estimates the global market potential at $5 trillion, while Barclays projects an addressable market of $200 billion by 2035 with 24 million humanoids deployed in China. China has denounced the measure as protectionism and promises retaliation just weeks before a planned summit between Trump and Xi Jinping. Several American researchers fear a boomerang effect, as most US laboratories use Unitree hardware due to the lack of accessible domestic alternatives.
