China is exploring whether to allow ByteDance and Alibaba to purchase Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 chips, designed for high-end professional workstations rather than data-center GPU clusters. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked select firms to submit detailed purchase plans. These workstation chips could be less exposed to the tightest US export restrictions. Earlier in 2026, China conditionally approved ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent to import over 400,000 Nvidia H200 chips, but only about 10,000 units had been delivered to each approved company by August. For Nvidia, the RTX Pro 5500 offers a way to maintain its Chinese revenue stream while staying within US regulations.
