The Commodity Futures Trading Commission will hold a public roundtable on Dec. 15 at its headquarters in Washington to examine whether derivatives markets could operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The livestreamed session, announced on Oct. 28, is the second formal step in the process following the agency’s summer request for comment. Participants will discuss overnight trading, tokenization on blockchain-style ledgers, and the infrastructure, staffing and risk-management requirements of a permanently operating market. The focus will be primarily on traditional derivatives, while participants will also consider the implications of tokenization for digital assets. The roundtable will not create any new rules; it is intended to document the industry’s costs, risks and readiness.
