CFTC proposes federal registration option for leveraged crypto exchanges

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has proposed a federal registration pathway for cryptocurrency exchanges offering leveraged, margin or financing options to retail clients. The initiative could establish a federal framework for certain venues, while spot-trading platforms would remain under state oversight. The proposal is not mandatory because Congress has not given the CFTC authority to require all crypto exchanges to register federally. Bitcoin reaching $200,000 by year-end remains low in market pricing, but the proposal could influence future expectations. The proposal’s progress will be closely monitored, particularly by Congress and the Federal Reserve, as acceptance could reshape crypto exchange regulation and affect Bitcoin prices and the broader crypto market.
