CFO turnover at America’s largest companies is on pace to hit 18.3%—the highest since the pandemic

CFO turnover is accelerating at America’s largest public companies, according to Crist Kolder Associates’ mid-year 2026 Volatility Report. The projected turnover rate for 2026 stands at 18.3%, compared to a historical 10-year average of 16%, marking the highest level since the pandemic, surpassing 18.2% in 2020. The average age of newly appointed CFOs has dropped to 48 in 2026, down from 52 in 2025, with an average tenure of 4.5 years. Several notable departures were announced in the first half of 2026, including Pascal Desroches at AT&T, Andrew Bonfield at Caterpillar, and David Denton at Pfizer, while Hilary Maxson joined Oracle to lead AI and cloud infrastructure development.
