Europe’s particle physics laboratory CERN signed a statement of intent on October 15, 2026 with French AI startup Mistral AI to develop a foundation model for high-energy physics. This model will be trained on billions of simulated proton-proton collision events from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), targeting three applications: collision reconstruction, particle identification, and anomaly detection. The partnership addresses a data volume challenge, as the LHC has already produced close to one exabyte of data, and the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade around 2030 is expected to increase collision rates by a factor of ten. Mistral brings expertise in training very large models, having previewed Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026, a model with 1 trillion parameters. The two organizations have not yet disclosed specific timelines, funding, or milestones beyond this initial agreement.
