Governor Gavin Newsom signed on September 30, 2026 a package of three laws regulating the use of artificial intelligence in workplace decisions. The main legislation, SB 947 (No Robo Bosses Act), prohibits employers from relying solely on automated decision systems when disciplining or terminating employees without human review. SB 951 mandates disclosure of job losses driven in substantial part by AI, while AB 1883 bars the use of AI tools that infer workers’ emotional states or collect neural data. These measures, described as the first of their kind in the United States, will take effect between January and July 2027, giving employers a window to adapt their systems.
