The Bureau of Labor Statistics released on August 28, 2026 a preliminary benchmark revision showing that total nonfarm payroll employment was overstated by 79,000 jobs, a correction of 0.1%. Private employment was revised down by 178,000 jobs. This revision, the smallest since 2021, contrasts with economists’ expectations who anticipated an upward revision of approximately 183,000 jobs, a swing of 262,000 jobs from consensus. The retail and manufacturing sectors were the main drags on this negative revision. The final benchmark revision will be published in February 2027.
