Buffett takes next step in plan to keep Berkshire from straying

Warren Buffett, 96, announced his resignation as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway’s board, becoming « chairman emeritus » while remaining a director. His son Howard Buffett will take the chairmanship to preserve the company’s culture and values, marking the third major step in his multi-year succession plan. Greg Abel, who became CEO at the end of 2025 replacing Buffett, will continue running the conglomerate’s daily operations valued at over $1 trillion. Berkshire class A and B shares ended the day nearly unchanged after an initial dip, as markets had already priced in the news. Howard Buffett, a 62-year-old farmer and former sheriff, also heads a philanthropic foundation that distributed $700 million last year.
