BitMEX, the crypto derivatives platform founded by Arthur Hayes in 2014, will permanently shut down on September 23. HDR Global Trading Limited, its owner and operator, cited a strategic business review as the reason for the closure. The exchange, which was fined $100 million in January 2025 for violating the Bank Secrecy Act, had been seeking a buyer since February 2025. The BMEX token plunged roughly 91% in 24 hours following the announcement. KYC’d users who fail to withdraw their funds before closure will be charged a monthly fee of $50 or 1% per annum.
