The cryptocurrency exchange Binance suffered a hack estimated to have an impact of around $6.3 billion. The initial investigation indicates that an attacker may have compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions, with no private key leak detected. Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, revoked the affected address authorization and engaged law enforcement to trace the stolen funds. Around $3 billion in affected assets have already been frozen on-chain, and the platform pledged to cover all losses through its SAFU fund and company resources. Bitcoin fell from above $81,000 to roughly $76,400, while derivatives market liquidations reached nearly $1.5 billion.
