Binance Hack: North Korea Linked to $6.3 Billion Theft

Share

Part of the funds stolen in the Binance hack were found on an Ethereum address that had also received, 45 minutes earlier, funds from the $388 million Bitget theft. This convergence suggests that the same actor, likely the North Korean group TraderTraitor, was responsible for both attacks. Chainalysis and TRM Labs point to TraderTraitor, with TRM Labs expressing a high level of confidence, although the attribution has not been officially confirmed. Binance estimates that between $6.3 billion and $6.4 billion was stolen, including approximately $3 billion that has been frozen, while the fate of the remaining $3.3 billion remains uncertain. The attack may have been facilitated by access to a compromised DevOps engineer’s computer, without the attackers necessarily obtaining users’ private wallet keys.
