The Binance hack, attributed to the North Korean group TraderTraitor, is estimated to have resulted in the theft of $6.36 billion, or about 19.3% of North Korea’s annual GDP. According to TRM Labs, nearly $3 billion has been frozen, but the hacker still controls more than $2.4 billion in ETH and BTC. This amount is 13.5 times higher than North Korea’s estimated $469 million in goods exports in 2025. Stolen cryptocurrencies reportedly accounted for about one-third of Pyongyang’s foreign-exchange revenue in 2024, according to the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team. Increased international sanctions and trade restrictions have encouraged North Korea to use digital assets to obtain foreign currency.
