Bill Gates Wants a Robot Tax and Jobs Humans Can’t Be Fired From

Bill Gates published a nearly 6,000-word essay in which he describes the AI transition as « one of the most turbulent times in human history. » The Microsoft co-founder is calling for a tax on AI tokens and robots to offset the payroll-tax advantage that automation has over hiring workers. He also proposes a category of jobs called « Human Reserved, » reserved for humans even when AI could technically perform them, potentially covering up to 40% of jobs in its most ambitious version. Gates argues that AI can directly substitute for human cognition in fields such as law, customer service, medicine, and software within a single decade, unlike previous technological transitions that had created new categories of jobs.
