U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that accelerated government debt buybacks could be higher than the announced $4 billion. On Wednesday, Treasury announced it would double its scheduled buybacks of longer-dated securities from $2 billion to $4 billion, triggering a temporary decline in yields. The U.S. national debt crossed the $40 trillion mark this week, an amount Bessent said could be managed through economic growth. The 30-year bond yield was hovering around 5.235 %, while the 10-year yield stood at approximately 4.704 %. Bessent added that he would meet with Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, to discuss fiscal consolidation.
